Archival Statement Watercolour Sculptures 2025
STATEMENT OF PAPER CONSERVATION FOR PAPER SCULPTURE ARTWORKS
Artist: Stefan Gevers 2025
OVERVIEW OF CONSERVATION TREATMENT
The conservation treatment undertaken for these paper sculptures involved a comprehensive assessment of its condition, followed by a series of carefully planned interventions aimed at stabilizing and preserving the artwork for future generations.
Conservation Treatments:
The following archival materials and techniques were employed in the conservation process:
All Paper Sculpture Artworks have been conserved using the following process;
· The artworks are first sealed with archival quality varnish, followed by applying a Isolation Coat (Golden Paints) which allows you to clean the artwork in the future. And finally sealed with a Matte, clear UV resistant, Matte archival acrylic coating.
· Papers: Archival-grade papers (Arches or Fabriano HP 300gsm) have been used. A reversible, acid-free adhesive was applied to ensure that repairs could be reversed in the future without damaging the artwork.
· Reinforcement: The artwork is reinforced with a lightweight, support system protected with an acid free archival barrier to the paper. This includes the use of archival-grade glue, paint and paper to provide additional strength and longlivity.
To enhance the longevity of the conserved artwork, best practices for environmental control were recommended:
- Maintain stable temperature and humidity levels (ideally 20°C and 40-50% relative humidity).
- Ensure low light exposure
- Avoid storage or display in direct sunlight or high pollution areas.
- Dust gently to clean the artwork
CONCLUSION
With the treatments applied and appropriate care recommendations, these artworks are now better positioned for longevity, safeguarding its integrity and aesthetic value for future generations to appreciate. Regular monitoring is advised to ensure the ongoing preservation of this artwork.
